The Calm Parent's Back to School Checklist

September has a way of arriving all at once. Here is the checklist we share with Sturdy Kids families to make uniform season genuinely calm, especially when your child needs plus fit, generous fit or adaptive uniform that the high street will not stock in a hurry.

Early July: measure and audit

Re-measure your child (five minute guide here) because a term of growing changes things. Then audit last year's uniform honestly. Anything with a digging waistband, dragging hem or daily tugging goes on the replace list, whatever its condition. Comfort problems do not improve with age.

Mid July: order the hard-to-fit items first

Trousers, skirts and pinafores are the most fit-critical items, so order these first while full size ranges are in stock. Specialist sizes sell through fastest in August, and leaving it late is how families end up settling for "nearly fits". Order two of anything your child lives in; you will thank yourself by October.

Late July: try on at home, kindly

Home try-ons beat changing rooms every time: no queues, no mirrors, no pressure. Make it quick and positive, check the fit points that matter (comfortable waistband sitting down, no dragging hems, arms raise freely) and set aside anything that needs the leg shortening for our alterations service.

August: the supporting cast

• Shirts, blouses, polos and jumpers, checked for comfortable chest and shoulder room
• PE kit that your child feels genuinely comfortable in, because PE confidence starts with kit
• Socks, tights and a coat that closes comfortably over the jumper
• Name labels on everything, especially the items that fit perfectly and must come home

The week before: rehearse the mornings

A full dress rehearsal a few days early surfaces any last problems while there is still time to fix them. If fastenings are slowing your child down, our adaptive options here can turn a stressful morning job into an independent one.

And a note for you
