Sturdy Fit vs Generous Fit vs Plus Fit: What the Labels Really Mean

Children's clothing brands use fit labels inconsistently, which makes online shopping a guessing game for parents. As the UK's plus fit specialists, here is our honest decoder.

Sturdy fit

Traditionally a schoolwear term, sturdy fit means trousers cut wider at the waist, seat and thigh, usually with a standard or slightly shorter leg. It suits children who need waist room without extra length. Quality varies by brand: the best sturdy fit trousers are properly re-proportioned garments; the worst are standard trousers with a bigger waistband stitched on. Look for brands that publish waist and inside leg measurements separately.

Plus fit

Broadly interchangeable with sturdy fit, plus fit tends to be used across a wider range of garments, not just trousers. A plus fit shirt, for example, is cut fuller through the chest and body with sleeves kept to standard length. At Sturdy Kids we use plus fit as our umbrella term for garments re-proportioned for broader builds.

Generous fit

Generous fit usually means extra room throughout the whole garment. It is the most forgiving cut and a good choice for children who are broad through the chest and shoulders as well as the waist, or for parents who want comfortable growing room without sizing up in age.

Fully elasticated vs half elasticated

• Fully elasticated (pull up) trousers and skirts have stretch all the way around and no fastenings. Best for younger children, for independence and for anyone who finds buttons and zips tricky.
• Half elasticated garments have a smart flat front with elastication at the back. They look identical to standard uniform from the front while flexing comfortably all day. Our most popular option for older children.

Easy on and adaptive

Easy on and adaptive clothing is designed or modified for accessibility: Velcro instead of buttons, pull-on designs, flat seams and sensory-considerate fabrics. At Sturdy Kids we also adapt garments individually, because independence getting dressed is worth a great deal to a child here.

Tall fit

Tall fit means longer legs and sleeves on standard-width bodies. Some boys need tall and sturdy together, which barely exists on the high street; our alterations service bridges that gap by tailoring length and width independently.
