Adaptive Clothing: Small Changes, Huge Independence

One of our favourite phone calls ever came from a mum whose daughter had just dressed herself for school for the first time, aged seven, thanks to a school shirt we had adapted with Velcro behind the buttons. "She walked into school like she owned the place," her mum said. That is what adaptive clothing does.

What adaptive clothing actually is

Adaptive clothing is ordinary-looking clothing with thoughtful modifications that make dressing easier. From the outside, an adapted Sturdy Kids shirt looks exactly like every other school shirt, which is precisely the point. The difference is hidden: Velcro closures behind decorative buttons, pull-on elasticated waistbands instead of hooks and zips, flat seams and soft fabrics for sensory comfort.

Who it helps

More children than you might think. Children with fine motor difficulties who find buttons frustrating. Children with dyspraxia, hypermobility or limb differences. Autistic children for whom certain seams, labels or fastenings are genuinely distressing. Younger children who simply are not ready for fiddly fastenings but are very ready to dress themselves. And any child for whom the school morning is currently a battle that adaptive design could quietly end.

Why independence matters so much

Being dressed by an adult when your classmates dress themselves is something children feel keenly. The ability to manage your own clothes, at home, in PE changing rooms, in the school toilets, is dignity in its most everyday form. Adaptive clothing hands that dignity back, and the confidence tends to spill into everything else.

How our adaptive service works

Tell us what your child finds tricky. That is genuinely the whole starting point. We will suggest garments from our easy-on ranges or adapt standard garments individually: swapping buttons for Velcro, adjusting fastenings, tweaking waistbands. Because we do this in-house in the UK, adaptations are made properly and look invisible.

There is no set menu, because there is no set child. If you are not sure whether something is possible, ask us here. The answer is usually yes.

A note on school uniform policy

Schools must make reasonable adjustments so every child can wear the uniform comfortably and independently. If you need product information to share with your child's school, we will happily provide it. In twenty years, we have never met a school that said no to a child dressing independently.
