First, the truth about high street sizing

High street school uniform is cut to an "average" child that plenty of real children simply are not. When a child is broader than that template, the usual advice is to size up by age. The problem is that sizing up makes everything bigger: longer legs, longer sleeves, wider shoulders. You end up with trousers rolled at the ankle and a waist that still will not close comfortably.

That is not your child being difficult to fit. That is a fit system that was never designed for them.

What "sturdy fit", "generous fit" and "plus fit" actually mean

These labels are used loosely across the industry, so here is how to read them:

• Sturdy fit or plus fit usually means a wider waist and hips with a standard or slightly shorter leg. This suits children who need extra room at the waist without extra length.
• Generous fit typically means extra room throughout the garment, useful for broader shoulders and chests as well as waists.
• Elasticated options come in two types. Fully elasticated waists pull up with no fastenings at all. Half elasticated waists have a smart flat front with stretch at the back.

1. Trousers or skirts first. These are the hardest items to fit, so start here. Order early, try at home calmly, and use alterations if the leg length needs adjusting.
2. Shirts and blouses. Look for generous cuts through the chest and shoulders. If buttons are a battle, adaptive versions with Velcro give children independence.
3. Jumpers and cardigans. Go for a size with comfortable room to layer. A jumper that rides up is the one children fidget with all day.
